Join Us to Champion Sustainable Senior Housing

We are thrilled that a plan has come forward for the remaining building on the former Ravenswood Hospital site.

A community meeting will be held this Wednesday, Feb. 3, to learn more about a proposal to convert the building at 4501 North Winchester Ave. into 74 senior affordable housing units and a supportive living facility with 120 units.

As you know, we have been advocating for additional housing for older adults in the Lincoln Square area for years. We commend Alderman Ameya Pawar for his leadership and stewardship for our older residents.

Forward Chicago conducted a Housing Survey in 2014. Among the findings:

• Over 85% of respondents expressed a strong desire to remain in their community as they age.
• Over 70% of respondents own single family homes, condominiums or apartments, yet are concerned about their ability to remain at home as they age.
• While 70% of respondents indicated a desire to remain in their homes as they age, a barrier frequently cited was the lack of affordable living options in our neighborhood.
• In particular, respondents overwhelmingly reported that should they sell their current homes, they are unable to afford to remain in their neighborhood due to the high cost of rent and/or purchase of another property.

Our next steps are to join the discussion and support this opportunity to bring sustainable senior housing to our neighborhood. We all know an older person, it may even be ourselves, who could benefit from this development. The community at large needs to hear from us.

The informational meeting will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Lycée Francais cafeteria (1929 West Wilson Ave.).
