Musical Mondays: New Classical Music Appreciation Series Coming this Fall!

Member Bill Charles has a profound love of music and he wants to share it. Thus, he has created a series for people who would like an informal introduction to classical music.

There will be six sessions, each with between 3 and 6 pieces of orchestral music. Most of the time will be spent just listening to music, with brief discussions between the pieces.

We will sample music that has been written over a span of almost 270 years. Some will be excerpts or movements from larger pieces; others, the shorter ones, will be played in their entirety. Each selection will have a very brief introduction about the piece, or the composer, or both.

Please plan to join us in the fall at Sulzer for this series. Mondays beginning in September.

This is a great example of how Forward Chicago works. Members decide what they want to do and we work together to make it happen. We have done scavenger hunts, talks, a conference, book clubs, movie and theater group, a walking club…the list goes on. Would you like to start something? Lets chat and make it happen!

Great Decisions Details & More

Summer 2017
Meeting each Monday in June and July from 7 to 9pm
Sulzer Regional Library, Community Room
Corner of Montrose and Sunnyside
Cost: $30.00
We will be meeting at the Sulzer Regional Library.   Tana Durnbaugh and Pat Wilder are organizing this group .
We use the 2017 Great Decisions booklet of 8 foreign policy articles, each about 10-12 pages in length (with photos and maps).  In addition, at each session we watch the corresponding video (about 30 minutes long) for the applicable topic which provides more information.
You need know nothing about the topic, nor do you need to do any further reading, in order to participate. The article and video provide enough information.  The booklet provides discussion questions, but often the person or persons leading the discussion of that topic will come up with questions to discuss.  In addition to the article and video, however, the Great Decisions web site provides a glossary of terms and items for further reading if you wish to “dig deeper.”
All of this material comes from the Foreign Policy Association, a non-partisan group dedicated to educating Americans about foreign policy.
If you wish to enroll email tanadurnbaugh@yahoo.com or go to Forward Chicago
 web site Forward Chicago.
Great Decisions Chicago Northside is sponsored by Chicago League of Women VOters, Chicago 47th ward,
Sulzer Regional Library, and Forward Chicago.

Let the Music Play! Join the Band.

If you have longed to play with a band and believe you don’t have the musical wherewithal, here’s an answer to that wish: the Lake Effect Clarinet Quartet (LECQ).  No, you don’t have to play a challenging instrument like the clarinet, but you can join with a kazoo!

The LECQ gave a delightful family concert at Sulzer Library on Saturday, December 17th, performing several selections from J.S. Bach’s “The Christmas Oratorio” and then descending to the great classic, “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.”  Hearing the bass clarinet’s “voice” for Mr. Grinch was delightful.

To conclude the program, the audience tuned their kazoos, and we did a rousing performance of Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” from the “Messiah.”  You’ve got your 2017 calendar by now, I hope.  Turn to next December and make a note at the top to include this program in your holiday festivities.
