Soothing to Consider

Last week I stopped by Begyle Brewing to give them a bit of business buying a six pack, when I saw one of my favorite neighbors, Pastor Jason of Ravenswood United Church of Christ. I asked how he, his family and extended family IE: his congregation, were doing during these trying times. He said he’s been very busy.

There’s so much to adjust to: staying home for weeks on end, social distancing, missing family, concern for our friends and loved ones, not knowing if or when we can travel safely or when life will be back to some sort of normal.

We’re all coping in our own and different ways. There’s an old saying “there are no atheists in foxholes”. Some of us are spiritual, others religious, some neither. We go to church or synagogue, or were raised in a religion and haven’t been in years. Others rarely or never went to a religious service, but these are unusual times.

Actually choosing and then going into a religious building may seem like a big step. But in times of virtual family gatherings and Zoom meetings perhaps a virtual or Livestream religious service could be comforting. It’s something to consider.

Meditation Monday with Pradhan Balter

Mondays in July 6, 13, 20, 27 from 10:00-11:30am

Below is an outline for our 4-week class. It is “loose”, meaning should conversation take us in another direction, that’s where we will go!

Each week we will review the meditation technique of the previous week, plus explore a new technique.

Week 1:

  • The ABCs of meditation
  • The technique is NOT the meditation
  • Introduction to the spiritual heart, versus the mind and emotions.
  • We’ll have 3 different exercise throughout this first session.

Week 2

  • Tricks to make your meditation more regular.
  • Creating your meditation space.
  • Your inner and outer life are intimately related.
  • The power of gratitude.
  • Our meditation technique will focus on cultivating a particular inner quality. While we will use gratitude as the quality this week, this technique can be used to cultivate any inner quality.

Week 3

  • What is consciousness?
  • Our satisfaction/happiness lies within!
  • Our meditation technique: we will explore breathing exercises.

Week 4

  • How does consciousness play out in our lives?
  • Managing our consciousness is the key to managing our day!
  • Technique: Possibly visualization or mantra, that is, the power found in words!
