A Community Asks for Change: CTA Hearings #11 Lincoln Bus

Nov. 17 was a cold, windy Chicago night, when everyone would have loved to stay in their warm homes or apartments. Yet over 100 Chicagoans — old, young, strong, infirm — came out for a cause they believe to be not just important, but essential.

That cause is the return of the #11 Lincoln Bus from Lawrence to Fullerton.

These folks weren’t alone. They were joined by Alderman Ameya Pawar, State Rep. Greg Harris, and several area Chambers of Commerce, representing hundreds of businesses.

Age-Friendly Chicago – What Does it Mean for Our Neighborhood?

Age Friendly Chicago

Please join Forward Chicago on Saturday, Nov. 15, at our Ideas into Action meeting. Northwestern University researchers will share data from the Age-Friendly Chicago survey that many of us completed earlier this year.

They will also present data specific to our neighborhoods. Join us as we welcome:

Dr. Amy Eisenstein
Research Assistant Professor
Department of Medical Social Sciences, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University

Dr. Rebecca Johnson
Research Assistant Professor
Buehler Center on Aging, Health & Society, Northwestern University

Our guest speakers will share the findings and implications of Chicago’s World Health Organization (WHO) Age-Friendly Survey. (Phase 1 findings of the Age-Friendly Chicago initiative were published in 2013.)

We’ll discuss the citywide data and examine the results specific to our neighborhoods. Expect to learn about housing, transportation needs, finances and more.

We’ll use this information to plan steps that ensure our neighborhoods remain the best places to live — at every age!

When: Saturday, Nov. 15: 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Where: St. Matthias Convent – 4927 N. Claremont (Free parking in the north lot)

Why: Because an age-friendly community benefits us all – join your neighbors to make it happen!

Refreshments will be served. Please call if you need a ride.

Open House Chicago: Oct. 18-19

Chicago is a known destination for tourists and students who visit our world-class architecture. We have heard of Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe; however, there are many more we haven’t learned about, but whose work we have admired for many years.

For the very first time, some of our neighborhood’s architectural wonders are included in the annual Open House Chicago.

Constantine Bacil: Living in the Moment, Honoring the Past

Produced by Sylvia Springer / SpringCross Media

We are delighted to introduce the fifth interview in our video series: Meet Constantine Bacil, a neighborhood resident since 1959.

Constantine, 83, takes us back to his Greek roots in the neighborhood and so much more. He reminisces about living in the Lincoln Square community for over 55 years, from his early visits to Welles Park and graduating from Amundsen High School to the bar that was once under the Western Avenue El station.
