Lunch Bunch Reviewed

It may have been wet and somewhat gloomy outside but here was nothing but sunshine inside at our lunch bunch outing on Oct. 17. Seven (must be our lucky number)  members met at S&G’s Restaurant , 3000 N Lincoln Ave to share laughs, interests, conversations and great food. Although not in our 47th Ward, it is one of our Forward Chicago sponsors.

John not only welcomed us warmly but also provided a complimentary fruit platter. Thanks John!! Most of us had to take home doggy bags as the food ( most of us ordered various skillets from the extensive breakfast menu) was not only good but abundant. So make sure you check it out and tell John we sent you! We discussed several happenings around the ward and upcoming events.

Want to try something new? On Monday Oct 21 from 8-10pm Hamburger Mary’s 5400 N Clark will donate all proceeds from their HamBingo Mary’s night to our ward’s Pantry. Guarantee this isn’t your usual church bingo when the caller is Velicity Metropolis all decked out in full drag!!! Join the fun and play all night for $15 with a chance to win some possibly interesting prizes.

The next lunch brunch location on Nov 21 will be announced soon and our dinner will be Nov 14 at Chez Simo Bistro 1968 W Lawrence. This is a BYOB establishment without a corkage fee so feel free to bring a bottle of your favorite wine to share. You may even acquire a taste for one you haven’t tried in the past.

So bring your wine, bring a new friend or neighbor (it was noted there were very few men who attend so gentlemen out there come on out!!) to join us whether for lunch or dinner or both!

A bientot!!

Dinner Club – Dining Around the Ward!

Red LionBy Forward Chicago member Sharon Kahler

You missed it!! Oct 10 found us in merry ole England enjoying British fare including fish and chips, spotted dick and a selection of fine beers at The Red Lion. This was the first of Forward Chicago’s monthly ethnic “dining around the ward” dinners held the second Thursday evening of the month.

We were a small but lively group of long time and newer residents of the area. The older residents reminisced about the neighborhoods of the past comparing them to our more modern often impersonal neighborhoods. Whether newcomers or old timers, all shared a hope and positive vision for the future of our city starting in our own backyards.
This is the vision of Forward Chicago so won’t you join us next month (November 14th) when we travel to France dining at Chez Simo Bistro?
Bring your memories, your ideas, your interests to share and maybe you’ll even meet a person you didn’t even know living on your block. All this to look forward to and yummy French food too! What could be better?? C’est si bon!!!

Gorgeous Morning at Winnemac Park!

Jerry's view of the ParkIt was last Wednesday, September 25, around 7:00AM. Going north on Western avenue, I noticed beautiful patches of fog in parts of Welles Park. After I had completed my first task of the morning, I was turning south on Damen from Winnemac and noticed more of the rarely seen fog patches in Winnemac Park. Fortunately, I spotted a parking place and promptly took it. Fog was abundant in the park, so as I enjoyed the beauty of it all, I took the opportunity to snap a few pictures to share the experience with friends. What I particularly liked, was a stream of fog floating about eight to ten feet off the ground. I tried to capture it by framing it between the indigenous plant from the prairie garden and a pair of trees on the right. The experience put me in a fine mood for the rest of the day.

Jerry Perkins is one of Forward Chicago’s talented volunteers – thanks for sharing Jerry!

Lunch Bunch at Gene’s

IMG_3880IMG_3881When we last met for lunch bunch it was a gorgeous summer day, just like we hoped. We met on the roof of Gene’s Sausage Shop at 4750 N Lincoln at noon. The rooftop restaurant is a pretty traditional beer garden concept, sausage, potato salad and beer, you get the idea. It is not a traditional restaurant though, order and pick up your own food, no wait staff. Be sure to bring cash, though there is an ATM as well.

Once we navigated the picnic tables, everyone enjoyed their food. Being on the roof made it really special, the rooftop is spectacular! The planters, breeze and company made it another big success.

Gene’s is a great hidden gem, so don’t tell anyone!

ROOFTOP HOURS:  Thurs.-Sat. 11AM-8PM
                                      Sunday 11AM-4PM

Check out the website, and don’t forget to stop by the store for some great meat for the grill, a fantastic wine, beer, and liquor section, artisan cheeses, imported sundries and teas, and the deli – you’ll be set for the week! PS they also have delicious sweets for after dinner 🙂

Sewing Circle expands to become Craft Circle!

Craft circle

August brought another exciting Sewing Circle to Sulzer Library. In fact, our group has grown to include so many different types of crafters that we have changed the name to Craft Circle!

Embroiders, quilters, cross stitchers, knitters, all types are coming together to both learn from and teach each other, share their expertise, see each others projects and find out about other types of crafts.

In August, members brought some items from their stash to share. We also had some generous donations from the community where fabric, patterns, thread, and other supplies found their way to new homes where they will be used in doll clothes, quilts, aprons, scarves, and more.

Thanks to all our members and we look forward to growing. Please mark the third Wednesday of the month in September to join us.

Why I’m with Forward Chicago

My name is Matt Altstiel and I am a volunteer with Forward Chicago. In the grand scheme of things, I am young at 28 years old. I’ve reached the age where I consider my parents friends and understand the sacrifices they’ve made. I now relate to their decisions even as I disagreed with them at the time. I respect and value their insight more than ever as I navigate some of the challenges they faced with careers, finances, and family. They are approaching retirement and they tell me they’ve started to slow down. I start thinking about my own age, my trajectory and where I hope to be by the time I arrive at 60 and beyond.

When I think about turning 60, 70 or even 80, I look towards my maternal grandmother and my paternal grandfather. Both illustrate two different outlooks on aging. My grandmother was full of life, used to walk for miles each day, and had a busy social calendar. My grandfather golfs twice per week, maintains weekly card games with friends, and volunteered 20 hours a week until age 88. The major difference is that my grandfather stayed active, and my grandmother didn’t.

I remember the moment it all changed. My grandmother fell and broke her arm. Rather than work harder to rehab her arm, she stopped physical activity. Although she was never overweight, she developed Type II diabetes. At this point, the doctor told her she needed to start exercising. She didn’t and slowly the lost the use of her feet, and then her legs. Her mind stayed sharp and she remained in good spirits, at least in front us grandkids. I hated that she had to move out her home and into a nursing home. I felt she had given up and how unfair it seemed to lose her at 79.

My grandfather is turning 90 this year. He no longer drives or volunteers, but he walks every day. I’ve pulled into his driveway to see him on top of the roof cleaning the gutters. In 1985, he had triple bypass surgery and was told he’d have 10 years maximum. In 1990, he was diagnosed with Type II diabetes. He doesn’t need insulin because he regulates his diet and exercises. He gave nearly 25 years to Lutheran Social Services, starting Fort Wayne’s Annual Paint-a-Thon, a program that has painted over 1,000 homes for low-income seniors. He’s a man who won a $10,000 prize awarded for his volunteerism, and gave every cent back to charity. All this he accomplished after the age of 65.

It is for both of them that I am with Forward Chicago. I am inspired by individuals like my grandfather and know an organization like Forward Chicago will help keep the wonderful people aged 55 and better active as the age in our Ward. I am honored for the opportunity to gain the insight won through years of experience and hope to follow in the footsteps of my grandfather by making a difference.
